Alessandro Volta was born on 18.02.1745 in present-day Italy. He is known as the father of the electrical battery (but see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baghdad_Battery). His discovery was inspired by his observations of ‘animal electricity’ and more specifically his experiments with frog’s legs (even though he was not French). He was greatly idolised by his students, in sharp contrast to his secluded lifestyle and focus on his family.
